Hong Kong Coalition for a Free Burma
Will Suu Kyi be Freed after the Sham Elections in Burma?
In 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won 80% of parliament seats in the general election. The results were not honoured by the military government and Aung San Suu Kyi was put under house arrest. Twenty years later, the military government announced the elections would take place on 7 November 2010. As the polling day is approaching, it is clear that the election will not be free and fair. Instead, the election is merely a means to affirm the power of the dictators.
Apparently, the future of Burma will not be changed overnight after the election for its results have been determined before the polling. Nevertheless, the election is significant as it closely links with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi. In May last year, Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted by a fabricated charge. On 13 November, she should be released by the military junta. Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained for 14 years in the past 20 years. People in Burma and around the world have high hope that her release can bring changes in Burma.
On the eve of the sham election in Burma, the Hong Kong Coalition for a Free Burma wants to invite you to a sharing on political situation in Burma. The major purposes of the event are to seek support for people in Burma and solicit suggestions of how can we react to the upcoming situation in Burma.
