For the past four years, the Philippines had a record of more than a thousand activists killed extra judicially and about 200 recorded enforced disappearances. Local, regional international campaigns, fact-finding missions (twice sponsored by the HKCAHRPP) and lobbying work at the UNHRC level had marked a decrease in the number of victims. It is, however, noted of late that arrests, killings, enforced disappearances now target staunch supporters of the marginalized sectors and renowned political personalities critical of the Philippine administration, by filing trumped up charges against them. Let us have a glimpse at the prospect of peace and the developing political climate in the country.
It is as well in the above backdrop that we find it very timely for two volumes of Prof. Jose Maria Sison's Selected Writings is launched. Professor Sison, live in exile continuously persecuted with his wife, Julie, in The Netherlands. On March 31, 2009, insufficient legal and convincing evidences made the Public Prosecution Service of the Dutch government dismiss the case against Professor Sison concerning the deaths of two security consultants and military assets of the Philippine government. His name remains in the terrorist list of the Council of the European Union and the US State Department. The HK Defend supports his demand that this be removed. Thus we offer you an hour of launch and connections with Professor Sison via Skype video.
