Chairperson's Remarks

He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover, he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

(Ecclesiastes 3:11, NRSV)

The Hong Kong Christian Institute (HKCI) seeks to gather Christians to contribute to Hong Kong and the Church—its goal when it was founded 15 years ago. Members and staff still move in this same direction under the leadership of the director. If donations are an indicator, HKCI's work has been recognised and affirmed by churches and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Hong Kong and overseas. We are grateful for this!

In the year 2003, there have been many significant and challenging experiences. The United States' occupation of Iraq, the outbreak of SARS, Article 23 and the dramatic developments sparked by the overwhelming July 1 demonstration tell us that these events are not only in our hands. For us, the faithful, they are testimonies that reveal God's presence and accompaniment with people. We are in reverence for this!

Despite the excitement from the July 1 demonstration and its impact on Article 23, there are still conflicts and confusion in Hong Kong and elsewhere. Hence, the people of faith of HKCI should remain sober, gather good will and walk with the director, who begins her second term, to positively contribute to Hong Kong and the Church. We have hope for this!
